Using multiple devices to check email

If you would like to check mail on our servers with a mail client (outlook thunderbird, etc) as well as check on your smartphone, ipad, another computer, or webmail, it is best to use IMAP for both devices/computers.  IMAP stores the mail on the server side, ensuring that mail on all devices are the same.  When setting up the mail client on either your computer or device, you would pick "IMAP" for the server type and use the same settings -- host addresses, username, etc -- as you would for a POP3 connection.  The only difference would be the server type and the port used (which the mail client will know).   Even if our control panels say just POP3 in their information, all our mail servers support both systems.

The main difference between pop3 and IMAP is where mail is stored.  With POP3, mail clients usually download the mail and delete it.  With IMAP, mail is stored on the server.  Storing on the server can increase overall mailbox size and so it is recommended to clear out old mail or save it to a local folder on your computer by dragging and dropping the mail from the inbox to the local folder in the folder list.  Mailboxes support a maximum of 2040 MB (~2 GB) .
