An SSL certificate encrypts data that is sent between the server and you, your computer, your visitors computers, etc. It prevents anyone sniffing/snooping/capturing/etc the data that travels on the network. It is used when you need to protect items such as logins, billing info, contact info, and other sensitive information transmitted via your site or services. SSLs are also used on mail servers and ftp servers to protect logins.
