How to setup an email account on your Android

It is best to use IMAP on your smartphone so that it does not conflict with any other mail client.  In fact, using IMAP throughout is recommended when using multiple devices, however, you can use POP3 with delete options set to extended times.

To setup your Android smartphone to download mail, please do the following:

  1. Go to Settings -> Accounts -> Add Account
  2. Pick the "Email" option
  3. Pick "Others"
  4. Put in your email address in the email address field
  5. Put in your password in the password field
  6. Hit Next
  7. Pick "IMAP" as account type
  8. Incoming Mail server Settings:
    1. Incoming mail serveR:  mail.example.com -- where example.com is your real domain
    2. Username:  The full email address
    3. Security: SSL - accept all (this is required so that it does not give a certificate error because of using mail.example.com instead of the real mail server name)
    4. Port: 993
  9. Outgoing mail server settings:
    1. Outgoing mail server: mail.example.com -- where example.com is your real domain
    2. Username: The full email address
    3. Require authentication / Sign in
    4. Security: SSL - accept all (this is required so that it does not give a certificate error because of using mail.example.com instead of the real mail server name)
    5. Port: 465
  10. Complete the setup and you should now be done .

NOTE: There are many mail clients for Android, such as K-9, and the above settings can be used for those.
